What is Oregon State University Outreach & Engagement?
As a land-grant committed to teaching, research and outreach and engagement, Oregon State University promotes economic, social, cultural and environmental progress for the people of Oregon, the nation and the world. The Division of University Outreach and Engagement was established in 2007, and then created OSU's Extended Campus and Extension Service units which have been major contributors to the outreach and engagement mission of the university.
What is a land-grant university?
A land-grant university (also called land-grant College or land-grant institution) is an institution of higher education in the United States designated by a state to receive the benefits of the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890.
Although the heart of American economics at this time was primarily the production of agricultural goods, it was the wealthy class and not the average citizen who had access to higher education. The mission of these institutions is to focus on the teaching of practical agriculture, science, engineering and classical studies as a response to the industrial revolution and changing social class. The Morrill Land Grant Acts made education possible for the common person and provides research and service to its citizenry. OSU is unique due to the fact that it is one of only a few institutions to have been appointed the status of a land, sea, sun and space grant university. The essence of what it means to be a land grant university is the integration of teaching, research (scholarship) and extension. |
What can Extension Service do for me?OSU Extension faculty work with business people, growers, foresters, youth, and community leaders. They see first-hand what’s working, and what’s not working, in Oregon communities. Extension educators consult with scientists at Oregon State University, where they focus their research on the real issues important to real people. Results from that research circle back to the community through Extension programs. Knowledge grows from this cycle of reaching out and engaging the people who use it and also bring the campus out into the community.

Statewide public service programs are the engines rebuilding Oregon’s economy. Knowledge grows from the ground up, from Extension to research and back again. OSU Extension translates and adapts research for practical local uses to support agriculture, forest and natural resources management, health, nutrition, family and 4-H youth programs, and community development.
